When treating your Goldfish, one of the best standby treatments you can provide is to add salt to the tank. As fish lose salt from their bodies very quickly, making sure there is enough aquarium salt dissolved can reduce the effects of various diseases until you can obtain the treatment, or seek help from an expert.As a general rule, the correct amount of salt is one tablespoon of aquarium salt (NOT table salt for human consumption!), for every 5 gallons of water.

However, make sure you do not add too much salt when trying to help your goldish out. Similarly, do not treat the fish with chemicals or other medications unless you have been instructed to do so by a qualified person. Finally, make sure you don't start over with a brand new tank at the first sign of trouble as this will add additional stress to your goldfish and cause even more problems.
