Swimbladder Disorders in GoldfishThere are several possible causes of swimbladder disorders in goldfish. Typical causes are incorrect diet, trapped gas, bacterial infections and disorders induced by poor water quality. Physical deformities caused by selective breeding can also be a factor especially in fancy goldfish which have been bred into unusual shapes. A healthy swimbladder allows a goldfish to alter it's depth at will (i.e.allowing the goldfish to swim to the surface or dive to the bottom). Consequently the typical symptoms of a swimbladder disorder are that the goldfish has difficulty in swimming upwards to the surface or downwards from the surface to the lower levels of the tank or pond. If you believe poor water quality may be an issue then you should improve the water conditions. Try to reduce the amount of dried foods offered to your goldfish and replace by feeding daphnia which are a more natural food supply and which should give a laxative effect. If you feed pellet foods to your goldfish, try pre-soaking them before feeding your fish to avoid them swelling in the gut. If there are any signs of bacterial infection being responsible then it is recommended to treat with a specialist anti-bacteria treatment available from your pet shop. Swimbladder disorders in fancy goldfish that are suffering from physical deformities cannot be treated. It is recomended that fishkeepers should discourage trade in deformed fancy goldfish avoid buying them and thereby reducing demand. | ||
